A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross | Fantasy Book Review

a river enchanted

A River Enchanted” truly lives up to its name, offering an enchanting, atmospheric story infused with fantasy elements like spirits, magical weapons, and mystical flowers. The story unfolds at a rather slow pace, yet it provides an enjoyable reading experience. Especially, for those captivated by Scottish life, clan rivalries, and the simplicity of island existence. Set on a magical island divided between the two clans, Tamerlains and Breccans, the novel transports us to a world rich in tradition and intrigue.

One of the most delightful aspects of the book is its deep roots in Scottish culture. As a fan of “Outlander“, I found the descriptions cozy and evocative—the hearths in the houses, villagers tending to the kailyard, and the plaids they wear all contribute to a vivid, immersive atmosphere.

Story

The story is told from the perspective of the Tamerlaine clan, focusing on Jack, who returns to the island after a ten-year absence. His laird summons him due to the mysterious disappearance of girls. Jack’s musical talents are needed to communicate with the spirits of the four elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. I warn you the entire plot revolves around this central mystery. The Tamerlaines striving to uncover the fate of the missing girls and determine whether the spirits or the raiding Breccans are responsible.

Characters

While the plot may not be the strongest aspect of the book, the author excels in character development. Jack’s family, including his mother and sister, is well-drawn and relatable. Adaira, the laird’s daughter, transitions from an enemy to a lover for Jack. However, their romance felt somewhat lackluster. In contrast, I found the love story between Adaira’s cousin Torin and his wife Sidra far more compelling. Their genuine sorrow over losing a daughter and their passionate efforts to overcome their problems resonated deeply with me, unlike Jack and Adaira’s more tepid relationship.

My thoughts

My feelings about this book are mixed. Despite its mainly positive reviews on Goodreads, and while I understand its appeal, the weak plot and unoriginal twist left me wanting more. The central themes of family, community, and caring for others contribute positively to the overall atmosphere, yet the romance and excitement were lacking for me. I often found myself needing to be in a specific, cozy mood to pick the book up again.

In conclusion, A River Enchanted draws readers in with its captivating atmosphere and well-developed characters. However, the plot’s weaknesses and the underwhelming romance prevent it from reaching its full potential. I wouldn’t rate it higher than four stars, but I still appreciate its unique charm and am hopeful for more in the sequel. If you enjoy a cozy, atmospheric read rooted in Scottish lore, this book might be for you.
