Starling House by Alix E. Harrow – Book Review

Starling house

I’ve been eyeing “The Starling House” on Bookstagram for quite some time, instantly drawn in by its captivating cover. It lingered on my TBR list until its Hungarian publication finally arrived which felt like forever. This Gothic fiction novel immerses readers into the mysterious realm of the Starling house and its even more mysterious owners the Starlings. Within its pages, themes of social dynamics, solitude, and the weight of past grievances are deftly explored.

Style

I set high expectations with this book because of its popularity. Initially, my reading experience left me somewhat disappointed, but as the story progressed, my opinion took a sharp turn. This was my first encounter with Alix E. Harrow’s writing, and at the beginning, the language, complete with cursing, felt somewhat jarring. However, as I delved deeper, I came to appreciate its necessity in shaping the character of Opal. Her tumultuous upbringing, marked by poverty and loss, molded her into a survivor accustomed to deception and hard labor to support her only little brother.

Eden

Opal has a love-hate relationship with her hometown, Eden, which adds further depth to the narrative. The town is controlled by a wealthy family with vested interests in a power plant that pollutes the air and water. The residents turn a blind eye to the environmental devastation in exchange for economic stability. Many times Eden feels like it is cursed because it has a high rate of accidents, deaths, and misfortunes.

Beneath Eden’s facade lies the mysterious Starling House, shrouded in secrecy and linked to the town’s tragedies. Opal, haunted by dreams of the house since childhood, finds herself drawn to its gates, where she encounters its reclusive owner, Arthur.

Romance and characters

Arthur offers employment to Opal, cleaning the house in exchange for generous pay which becomes a solution for her brother’s education and opens the door to uncovering the Starlings’ secrets. As their relationship blossoms, Opal and Arthur find solace in each other’s company, forging a connection rooted in shared loneliness and loss. Their journey together reveals that home isn’t merely a physical place but resides within the bonds of the heart.

The novel’s greatest strength lies in Opal’s remarkable character development. From her initial brashness to her eventual growth into a responsible and honest individual, her transformation is a testament to the power of human resilience and redemption. The dynamic between Opal and Arthur is a highlight, characterized by playful banter and genuine affection, serving as a beacon of hope amidst the darkness4.5

My review

In conclusion, “The Starling House” offers a compelling narrative enriched by its intricate characters and exploration of profound themes. Alix E. Harrow’s masterful storytelling captures the essence of longing, redemption, and the search for belonging, making it a truly memorable read.
